Correspondence of lawyer Henry Morse Channing, mostly concerning the use of Channing family papers then in the family's possession. Among the scholars who used the papers were Frederick T. McGill, who wrote a biography of the poet William Ellery Channing Jr., and Madeleine H. Rice and David P. Edgell, who wrote biographies of the Rev. William Ellery Channing Sr., Unitarian leader. Also included are legal papers concerning the founding of the Gore Place Society, a corporation formed to preserve and restore the estate of Mass. Governor Christopher Gore in Waltham and Watertown, Mass. In addition, the collection contains wills of Nannie Alexander, Barbara Channing Gregg, Katherine Minot Channing, and Katherine B. Hartt; diaries of Henry Channing (1897 and 1898); and drafts of articles, including a memoir of Edwin Merrick Dodd and a paper suggesting uses for the Castle Hill estate in Ipswich, Mass.

William Ellery Channing (1780-1842) graduated from Harvard College in 1798. He served on the board of the Harvard Corporation from 1813 to 1826, where he worked for the establishment of the Divinity School, which occurred in 1816. A Unitarian minister, Channing served as the pastor of the Federal Street Church in Boston from 1803 until his death in 1842.
